The Ultimate Texas A&M Move-In Guide

August 5, 2026|Student Life|

Moving into your campus residence hall is a major milestone, but doing it in the middle of a brutal August in Texas might make you want a solid game plan. To keep your A&M move-in day running smoothly and stress-free, you need to know the official university rules and practical strategies for moving in most efficiently.

Here’s your blueprint for a successful move-in day at Texas A&M.

Before You Arrive

A smooth move-in day starts well before you pack up the car. Taking care of these before you get there ensures you won’t face delays when you get to your dorm.

  • Complete Your Orientation – You must complete the mandatory Annual Housing Orientation on the myHousing Portal before you can select a check-in time. Staff cannot issue your room keys until this step is marked complete (check your email).
  • Stick to Your Timeslot – Move-in appointments are staggered to keep traffic and lines under control. Show up exactly during your appointed window to keep the system moving efficiently for yourself and your peers.
  • Shop at Home – Don’t wait until you get to College Station to buy your essentials. The local big-box stores and supermarkets will be cleaned out of just about anything you might need during move-in week. Pack everything from home.
  • Hydrate Early – Start drinking extra water the day before. Lugging heavy bins up multiple flights of stairs in high heat and humidity wears you down fast, so get ahead of the heat. There are lots of beverage options once you get to town, too.

The Check-In Process

Texas A&M has streamlined the key pickup process to get you through the administrative side and into your room as fast as possible.

  • Only the Student Goes In – When you arrive at your designated hall check-in office, family members should stay with the vehicle. Only the student needs to head inside to complete the paperwork.
  • Bring a Photo ID – A driver’s license or passport works perfectly. This is the only thing required to claim your keys, and the entire process takes less than ten minutes.
  • Check Out Hall Equipment – The front desk will have moving equipment like dollies and mallets available to borrow. These are handed out on a first-come, first-served basis, so ask for them right when you get your keys, and return them when you’re finished.
  • Move at Your Leisure – Your timeslot is strictly for picking up your key and accessing the unloading zones. Once you’re checked in, you can take as long as you need to transfer your belongings throughout the day.

Unloading & Parking

Managing your vehicle is the most hectic part of the morning. Following proper parking etiquette prevents gridlock around the residence halls.

  • Unload First, Organize Later – Pull into the designated unloading zone directly outside your hall, dump all your bags and bins straight into your room, and move your car. Don’t start unpacking or arranging your room while your vehicle is blocking the curb.
  • Tackle Heavy Items First – Move your refrigerator, microwave, and heavy plastic storage bins up to the room while you have the most energy. Save the light clothing bags for last.
  • Trash the Boxes Immediately – Don’t leave empty cardboard boxes in the hallways or jam them into the small common area trash cans. Break your boxes down flat and carry them out to the dumpsters outside your hall.

Gear & Safety Rules

Texas A&M Residence Life maintains strict rules regarding fire safety and property preservation. Knowing what’s allowed protects your housing deposit.

  • Bring Your Own Wheels – University housing no longer provides volunteer moving crews to carry your items. Because hall dollies are limited, bringing your own folding wagon or flatbed cart will save you hours of heavy lifting.
  • Wall-Hanging Restrictions – Nails and screws are not allowed. Use Command Strips or poster putty to secure your decorations. The only exception is Hullabaloo Hall, which comes with its own built-in bulletin board strips for decor.
  • Verify Appliance Limits – Microwaves are restricted to a maximum of 700 watts, and mini-fridges cannot exceed 4.4 cubic feet. Leave toasters, toaster ovens, hot plates, and open heating elements at home, as those are fire hazards.

Best Places to Eat

Moving day drains your energy fast. Refuel at one of these local staples that every new Aggie should try at the first opportunity.

  • Fuego Tortilla Grill – Famous for heavily loaded tacos on fresh scratch-made tortillas. It’s not overrated.
  • Burger Mojo – A funky burger joint specializing in classic smash burgers with perfectly crispy edges and different flavors, and Mojo fries.
  • Gumby’s Pizza – A definite local rite of passage. Known for their pepperoni rolls, but their Korean BBQ pizza is severely underrated.

Final Thoughts

Once your car is parked in its lot and your gear is safely in its new home, the hardest part of the week is officially over. Take your time setting up your space, get to know the people on your floor, and… welcome to campus.
